Vision Day

Vision Day

Due to unforeseen circumstances this event has been postponed.

VISION DAY

Date for your diary

Saturday 14th Sept 2019

10am to 4pm

Back in 2014, many of you will remember that we held a vision day at Exmouth Church, to seek God’s vision, help and direction in setting our mission priorities for the years ahead.

The Churchwardens and Clergy sense it is time for another one and St Rita’s centre in nearby Honiton has been booked for the day on Saturday 14th September. Penny Doe, from the Diocesan Mission Community Development Team will be coming to facilitate for us and the day will be set within the context of a Eucharist (Communion) service.

Please get the date in your diary now!!

This day is not just for Churchwardens and PCC members; we ALL have a role to play in being part of the body of Christ in this place. As St Paul writes to the Christians in Corinth (and in East Devon!), “You are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.”

More details to follow in due course.

Devon Historic Churches Trust Day -Ride and Stride

Devon Historic Churches Trust Day -Ride and Stride

Devon Historic Churches Day

Saturday 14th September is the day on which churches throughout Devon - and, indeed, the whole country - welcome visitors and raise funds for their Historic Churches Trust. Some special events are held, but the main fundraiser is the sponsored cycle ride for which half the money goes to the participant's own church and half to the Devon Historic Churches Trust. Simply cycle to as many churches as you feel able to during the day, either individually or in a small group, having obtained sponsorship per mile or per church visited. It is a truly inclusive event involving all age groups and abilities.

Whimple has supported this event for many years and in turn the Trust has grant-aided work on our church. The same is true of other villages in our Mission Community. It would be good if this year we could increase the number taking part, particularly some younger cyclists!

However, if exercise is not appealing to you maybe you would rather host a coffee gathering or cream tea, or serve friends a soup and roll for lunch. Perhaps you would find it fun to organise a ‘declutter day’, either on your own or with friends, or open your garden. There is no rule as to how to raise funds for the Trust. Monies raised go half to a church of your choice and half to DHCT.

If you would like to join ‘ride or stride’ on the 14th, sponsorship forms are available from Jane Clements - 01404 822181.

It is also important that visiting cyclists are welcomed to Whimple Church. If you can spare an hour during the day to be in the church please also contact Jane.

For more information about what’s happening on this day in each of the four villages in the Mission Community, please contact:

Joseph and the Ammazing Technicolor Dreamcoat - Workshop for Children

Community Theatre 4All

CALLING ALL YOUNG PEOPLE WHO LIKE DOING MUSIC AND DRAMA – WE NEED YOU

FOR

“JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT”

We are looking for young people who will be in school years 3 to 8 in September

The ‘Junior Cast’ Introductory Workshop will be held on Saturday 7th September from 2.00pm to 4.00pm in St Mary’s Church Whimple. The afternoon will comprise a range drama and singing activities.

Parents are welcome to either bring their children and leave them for the first 90 minutes of the session or remain in the church to watch the activities. All parents must be present from 3.30pm. At this time full details of the commitments involved in the whole project, from the first rehearsal to the last performance will be given to parents and Parental Consent Forms will be given out. It is also equally important that the Parental Consent Forms are returned on the next meeting date (Saturday 21st September) as, regretfully, without signed Parental Consent Forms we will not be able to accept a young person into the cast.

Performances will be given in St Mary’s Church Whimple in early 2020.

The Creative Team for this project will be Choreographer: Emily Thornhill; Musical Director: Emma Palmer; Stage Director: Tom Samson.

Grand Prayer Walk

Grand Prayer Walk

Would you like to join us for a ‘Grand Prayer Walk’ on Saturday 1st June?

As part of the Archbishops’ ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ initiative between Ascension Day (30th May) and Pentecost (9th June), we plan to walk between all four villages in the Mission Community—Whimple,

Talaton, Clyst Hydon and Clyst St Lawrence.

The whole walk is approximately 10 miles, or you can join in for part of it depending on your legs! We will be stopping periodically along the route to pause and pray (and eat!) and will be spending some prayer time in each of the four churches too, so if your legs aren’t up to much walking, you may like to join in for that part.

We will be walking, chatting and periodically stopping to pray, inspired by the beauty of God’s creation around us. At each of the four churches we will stop for a break, a prayer and a drink. Our start is at St James in Talaton, we will have a cup of tea or coffee at St Mary’s in Whimple (our arrival being timed to coincide with the regular Saturday morning tea and coffee slot), then pausing again to eat our packed lunches at St Lawrence, in Clyst St Lawrence. After this we will head on to St Andrews, Clyst Hydon before heading back to St James in Talaton.

We first did this as a mission community the year before last and it was a great success, everyone who attended had great fun.

Timings

9.30am.  Leave Talaton church car park.

11.15am St Mary’s, Whimple

1.30pm Clyst St Lawrence, Clyst St Lawrence

3.15 St Andrews, Clyst Hydon.

5.pm Talaton.

We will aim to roughly stick to the timings.

You are welcome to do the complete walk or whichever part most suits you, or just come to the churches to meet us. Stout boots/shoes would be a good idea as our walk is a mixture of quiet country lanes and a few footpaths, plus a waterproof, lunch and a drink. Dogs on leads are very welcome.

In the event of really bad weather will might need to review the plan, but will watch the forecasts nearer the time.

Abseil down the Church tower

Take this unique opportunity to abseil down the Church tower in Clyst St Lawrence and raise money for essential works for your Church!

We are delighted to be working with the Rock Centre in Chudleigh to arrange a professional event.  It is open to anyone aged 8 to 108! Just pay £10 to register and agree to raise at least £30 in sponsorship.  Funds raised will go to support essential work in the village’s only community building

Children are very welcome to take part, provided they are accompanied by an adult.

The event is being organised by the Clyst St Lawrence Church council (PCC).  We are hoping to reach a fundraising target of £5000.  There will be lots of activities around the event including a prize raffle and food stands throughout the event.

Register for just £10!

Please register by 31st March 2019

Email for a registration form to   abseil@clyststlawrence.uk or call Hannah on 01404 823702

Lent Course

Lent Course 2019 – Grass Roots Disciples

The Diocese of Exeter’s vision is to ‘Pray, Grow Disciples and Serve the people of Devon with joy.’ Last year’s Lent course was about Prayer; this year’s course will be about growing as disciples.

An informal, social and encouraging four session learning series to help us continue and develop our Christian journeys; to be empowered as disciples, explore the God-given opportunities for growth and mission in the world around us and expand our understanding of our faith, and calling.

It will be held at Talaton Parish Hall at 7.30pm on:

  • Week 1 – Tuesday 12th March 2019
  • Week 2 – Tuesday 19th March 2019
  • Week 3 – Tuesday 26th March 2019
  • Week 4 – Tuesday 9th April 2019

Through conversation, practical discussion, theological and sociological input and sharing of examples from elsewhere, the course will look at questions like:

What does discipleship looks like for us? What can be done to encourage further steps in discipleship? What does ministry and leadership mean for lay people?  How can we be aware and attentive in our Christian lives? What are the different facets of lay ministry? What are my gifts? How can I be part of a team? What does faith and holiness look like in our society? What does it mean to be a disciple in the contexts I find myself in?

It will be held at Talaton Parish Hall on some Tuesday evenings in March and April at 7.30pm. More details to follow but please get the following dates into your diaries.

  • Week 1 – Tuesday 12th March 2019
  • Week 2 – Tuesday 19th March 2019
  • Week 3 – Tuesday 26th March 2019

A discussion on power and control, AI, and social media. E.g. “Facebook, Twitter and similar social media platforms provide vast new opportunities for freedom of speech. Yet these platforms also exert unprecedented control over what types of speech are allowed.”

  • In the coming decades, humanity could hand over its autonomy to digital systems most people neither fully comprehend nor control.
  • Technological change promises consequences both economic and moral.

AI – and that is Artificial Intelligence

A discussion on power and control, AI, and social media. E.g. “Facebook, Twitter and similar social media platforms provide vast new opportunities for freedom of speech. Yet these platforms also exert unprecedented control over what types of speech are allowed.”

  • In the coming decades, humanity could hand over its autonomy to digital systems most people neither fully comprehend nor control.
  • Technological change promises consequences both economic and moral.
  • Through artificial intelligence and machine learning, engineers are building systems that are as good as or better than humans at accomplishing a range of tasks.

Breakfast

Breakfast

Join us for a very special breakfast.

Our speaker will be the Rev. Alan Dodds who has an amazing story to tell. He started David Bowie’s first band, The Konrads, and wrote his first recorded song.

For up to 30 minutes, Alan will share his experience through the performance of rock ’n’ roll covers, photos of Bowie and the band, stories, inside information and a Q&A session.

He’ll share the tale of a blind date in ’64 that changed his life, led him to his Christian faith, and eventually to the vicarage. Be prepared to laugh, cry, and reminisce.

The talk is particularly suited to an audience who can remember the 50s and 60s!

(As seen in The Telegraph: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/celebritynews/12102471/David-Bowie-how-a-broken-pint-glass-in-a-Blackheath-pub-changed-the-course-of-music-history.html )

Advent Quiet Space

Advent Quiet Space

Is the prospect of Christmas already driving you nuts? Are you already wondering how you will find the time, the energy and the money for Christmas? Do you sometimes wish you could ‘give it a miss’? Me too, and I’m the Vicar!

If the prospect of Christmas is already a source of anxiety for you then let me tell you about something I am proposing to do during ‘Advent’, the time traditionally spent ‘waiting’ for the arrival of Christmas, the birth of Jesus.

I am keeping Tuesday evenings free during Advent, and I won’t be using them to go Christmas shopping! Instead, from 7.30pm until 8.30pm, I plan to sit in Whimple Church, enjoy some quiet space in the sacred surroundings of this beautiful village church and simply wait. Would you like to join me?  Nothing will be expected of you other than to sit quietly. We might light some candles; we might listen to the odd piece of soft music; we might hear a short poem or a verse or two from the Bible. But mostly, we’ll be quiet. And, in doing so, while the world goes mad around us, my hope is that we’ll recover a sense of perspective, come home to ourselves and find some joy and peace in simply ‘being’ and waiting.

Devon Historic Churches Trust Day -Ride and Stride

Devon Historic Churches Trust Day -Ride and Stride

Devon Historic Churches Day

Saturday 8th September is the day on which churches throughout Devon - and, indeed, the whole country - welcome visitors and raise funds for their Historic Churches Trust. It is a truly

inclusive event involving all age groups and abilities.

If you would like to join ‘ride or stride’ on the 8th, sponsorship forms are available from Jane Clements - 01404 822181.

It is also important that visiting cyclists are welcomed to Whimple Church. If you can spare an hour during the day to be in the church please also contact Jane.

For more information about what’s happening on this day in each of the four villages in the Mission Community, please contact:

Round a Table and over a Pint

When? Monday 23rd April at 8.00pm

Where? Thirsty Farmer

Do come along to join the discussion

8pm in the Thirsty Farmer.

We will be round the corner on the right (restaurant area) as you come in.

We will discuss:

  • What does a strong and stable leader look like? (Do we have any in the free world?!)

In these turbulent times of air strikes and brinkmanship, do we have the right leaders at the helm?

  • Also pls bring your own definitions/examples of what good leadership looks like!

Also we will discuss another short video called “Today”:

  • "How much time and energy do we spend wishing things were how they used to be?"
  • “How do we ‘carpe diem’ (seize the day) and look forward to the future?”

Lent Course 2018

Lent Course 2018

The Diocese of Exeter’s vision is that we continually seek to be a people who are:

  • Growing in Prayer
  • Making new disciples
  • Serving the people of Devon with joy

This year, our Lent course will focus on the first of those priorities – ‘Growing in Prayer’, and to do that we shall be using a resource called ‘The Prayer Course’. This is a course that uses the Lord’s Prayer to examine different aspects of prayer – for example, adoration, petition, intercession, perseverance, listening and warfare.

Growing in prayer is essential if we are to witness to God’s Kingdom and become the people God has called us to be.

Please note the dates, time and venue.

Tuesdays in Lent:    20th and 27th February

                                    6th, 13th and 20th March

Venue:                       Talaton Parish Hall

Time:                         7.30pm until no later than 9.15pm
