Advent

Advent

Is the prospect of Christmas already driving you nuts? Are you already wondering how you will find the time, the energy and the money for Christmas? Do you sometimes wish you could ‘give it a miss’? Me too, and I’m the Vicar!

If the prospect of Christmas is already a source of anxiety for you then let me tell you about something I am proposing to do during ‘Advent’, the time traditionally spent ‘waiting’ for the arrival of Christmas, the birth of Jesus.

I am keeping Tuesday evenings free during Advent, and I won’t be using them to go Christmas shopping! Instead, from 7.30pm until 8.30pm, I plan to sit in Whimple Church, enjoy some quiet space in the sacred surroundings of this beautiful village church and simply wait. Would you like to join me?  Nothing will be expected of you other than to sit quietly. We might light some candles; we might listen to the odd piece of soft music; we might hear a short poem or a verse or two from the Bible. But mostly, we’ll be quiet. And, in doing so, while the world goes mad around us, my hope is that we’ll recover a sense of perspective, come home to ourselves and find some joy and peace in simply ‘being’ and waiting.

Tuesdays in Advent:

5th, 12th and 19th December 2017

7.30pm in Whimple Church

Devon Historic Churches Trust Day -Ride and Stride

Devon Historic Churches Trust Day -Ride and Stride

Devon Historic Churches Day

Saturday 9th September is the day on which churches throughout Devon - and, indeed, the whole country - welcome visitors and raise funds for their Historic Churches Trust. Some special events are held, but the main fundraiser is the sponsored cycle ride for which half the money goes to the participant's own church and half to the Devon Historic Churches Trust. Simply cycle to as many churches as you feel able to during the day, either individually or in a small group, having obtained sponsorship per mile or per church visited. It is a truly

inclusive event involving all age groups and abilities.

Whimple has supported this event for many years and in turn the Trust has grant-aided work on our church. The same is true of other villages in our Mission Community. It would be good if this year we could increase the number taking part, particularly some younger cyclists!

Further information and sponsor forms are available from Mike Ellingham, telephone 822945.

It is also important that visiting cyclists are welcomed to Whimple Church. If you can spare an hour during the day to be in the church please also contact Mike.

For more information about what’s happening on this day in each of the four villages in the Mission Community, please contact:

Coming up next time I have 2 debates for you:

  • Should Uni tuition fees be cancelled and are student loans creating a culture of debt? - with our 2 children just finishing their first year at Uni, student loans are a common topic of conversation, and they have been discussed at length in recent political debates.
  • Should prostitution be legalised or clamped down on further? - we don't shy away from difficult subjects at RATAOAP, having recently covered politics and death, sex is the next frontier! (We will cover cannabis and alcohol at a future RATAOAP...)

Impact Cell -Social Night

We welcome teenagers to join us on the 2nd and 4th Sunday evenings 7-8.30pm of every month. We meet in Whimple for games, bible study, discussions, cake and encouragement.

We also attend activities in Exeter such as FNX and Soul Exeter and every Autumn we have a weekend away on Dartmoor

FNX is short for 'Friday Night Experience'. We aim to make FNX a high quality event in every aspect. It's fast-moving, exciting, full of life, worship and God's Word. Over several FNX events, hundreds of young people give their lives to Jesus or re-commit their lives.

The event attracts up to 300 young people, from both churched and non-churched backgrounds. FNX aims to be relevant, bring in great speakers and quality, energetic and varied bands.

Soul Exeter is a monthly youth celebration for youth from across the area.t brings young people together from across Devon for a bigger event than local churches can offer. It focusses on worship, Biblical teaching and Spirit-filled ministry in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. It’s open to all youth, but is probably most geared at 15+. Younger youth are really welcome, but it is deliberately aimed at the older youth.

Impact Cell

Lent Course

Lent Course

Lent is traditionally a time for self-examination; but our “selves” and the situations we inhabit may be very different. Some of us are old and retired; some of us not so old and still working; some of us have children at home; others of us have no children or children who have long since left home.

So, this Lent, rather than looking simply at ourselves, our Lent course will help to make this a family exercise, to help us examine life from differing perspectives. We can all look back to where we’ve come from, and forward to what may lie ahead: each stage of life has its own particular pains and pleasures, triumphs and temptations. What can we learn, from our own story and each other’s, in order both to grow spiritually ourselves, and to support and encourage one another? What temptations must be resisted? What must we give up? What teaching and encouragement can we find from the Bible?

In five relaxed, consecutive Thursday evening sessions at

Talaton Village Hall, we will:

  • Look at the particular opportunities, challenges and temptations of each of the five ages of our lives – up to 18 (Discovering); 19 to 29ish (Choosing); 30-44ish (Responsibility); 45 to 59ish (Stock-taking); 60+ (Wisdom?)
  • Reflect on our experiences of those ages (if we have been there!), or our concerns about them (if we haven’t reached them yet!).
  • See what the Bible has to say to us, and how we can use our understanding and encounters to encourage others in our church family whatever age they are.

The course will be an informal opportunity to share, support and discuss, fully supported by tea and biscuits!

It will be run by Marc Kerslake, our 3rd year Ordinand in Training.

There are sign-up sheets in the churches.

For more information, contact Marc on 01392 462731.

As we aren't going to Bernards Acre at the end of half term we thought we would do something on Saturday 18th February instead. You can dip in and out as much as you like if you wish to revise for some of the day but we hope you'll join us for some of it.

Brunch will be at the Jones (Sweet Briar) at 10.30am followed by a coastal walk from Beer to Branscombe. We'll be back mid afternoon and have a session before having a themed dinner ( we can't miss that!) and silly games. It would be great to see as many of you as possible to give each other support during this exam time

Round a table and over a pint

Round a Table and over a Pint

When? Monday 25th July at 8pm

Where? New Fountain Inn

Do come along to join the discussion

Monday 23rd at The Fountain at 8pm -

Topics up for discussion are:
  • What is your ultimate Purpose? - following on from our personal passions a couple of months ago, have a think about the 'why?' or the 'so what?' in your life and we will each get a chance to share!
  • What is 'post-truth', and why was it rampant in politics in 2016? - possibly rather apt considering the inauguration that is taking place today!!
Hope to see you for a pint or two on Monday.

Orchard Harmony

Orchard Harmony was formed in 2002 by their musical director Julia Green, who had recently moved to Whimple.

The idea was to create a female acapella group singing a wide variety of musical styles to perform in the local community. Music performed has ranged from The Messiah, Vivaldi’s Gloria and Faure’s Requiem to Madrigals and arrangements of Show Tunes and even some Abba hits!

The group meets on Wednesday evenings from 7.30pm - 9pm in St Mary’s Church, Whimple and is open to anyone who would like to join - reading music is NOT a requirement - a love of singing and a sense of fun is!

Orchard Harmony has performed with Exeter University’s Semi-Toned in a sellout concert in St Mary’s Church and with Tedburn St Mary Community Choir, as well as various other concerts in East Devon.

Round a table and over a pint

Round a table and over a pint

Round-a-table-and-over-a-pint does what it says on the tin! Roughly once a month between 6 and 12 men gather round a table and over a pint (or two!) to discuss current issues and the big questions of life, the universe and everything! A Christian perspective is offered but open debate is encouraged, and there is a good mix of men from the church and wider village. It is held on a Monday evening, alternating between Whimple's two pubs.Topics discussed so far have included: Political correctness, redefinition of marriage, reliability of the Bible, The Theory of Everything and creation/evolution, Charlie Hebdo and freedom of expression, being happy at work, balancing social media and life, being a good dad, consumerism and poverty, euthanasia, God and suffering, physical and mental fitness, pay-day loans, war and peace  etc etc. A couple of times a year we also have a fry-up breakfast together on a Saturday morning and we've been for bike rides and sports dinners. Men aren't normally good at getting together to share their experiences, perspectives and concerns - but these evenings are bucking that trend!

Round a table and over a pint

Round a Table and over a Pint

When? Monday 25th July at 8pm

Where? New Fountain Inn

Do come along to join the discussion

Monday 28th at The Fountain at 8pm - we have a special guest: the Whimple Climate Change Prof, aka Richard Betts!

You may have heard on the news yesterday that a year after the Paris Climate Change conference, the agreement was finally ratified - and by more than 100 countries, including all the major superpowers:

Good article by Lord Nicholas Stern today in the Independent:

http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/ratification-of-the-paris-agreement-is-an-unmissable-opportunity-for-global-growth-a7399291.html

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_Agreement

Lord Stern says, "Ratification of the Paris Agreement is an unmissable opportunity for global growth" - but does it allow the developing world to grow at the same rate that the developed world grew during the Industrial Revolution?

So Richard is going to lead a discussion on, "Do we have a right to impose environmental standards on developing countries?"

If you are interested in joining please contact Julia Green on 07779 139251

It focusses on worship, Biblical teaching and Spirit-filled ministry in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. It’s open to all youth, but is probably most geared at 15+. Younger youth are really welcome, but it is deliberately aimed at the older youth.

Devon Historic Churches Trust Day -Ride and Stride

Devon Historic Churches Trust Day -Ride and Stride

Devon Historic Churches Day

Saturday 10th September is the day on which churches throughout Devon - and, indeed, the whole country - welcome visitors and raise funds for their Historic Churches Trust.

Orchard Harmony

Orchard Harmony

Impact Cell

Impact Cell
